A tropical rainforest is a type of ecosystem found in hot, humid environments in equatorial climates. Mean monthly temperatures exceed 18 °C (64 °F) during all months of the year. Average annual rainfall is no less than 168 cm (66 in) and can exceed 1,000 cm (390 in).
Tropical rainforests are among the most threatened ecosystems globally due to logging and agricultural clearance. Rainforests now cover less than 6% of Earth’s land surface. It is estimated that more than half of all the world’s plant and animal species live in tropical rain forests. It produces 40% of Earth’s oxygen.
